Chapter 14: The Key

I did not sleep, and neither did my mother.

Sometime before dawn I heard a key on the stairs.

I knew the scent before the door opened, cinnamon and pine, and my whole body leaned toward it.

"Don't," my wolf warned. "Make him say it."

The iron door swung wide.

Cade stood in the torchlight with a ring of keys in his fist and a cut over one eyebrow.

Behind him a young guard stared at his own boots, and I understood that the man had lowered his eyes in the hall and could not raise them again.

"Rose," Cade said. "Can you walk?"

"Better than you," my mother said, and got up off the cot.

She took the keys from his hand and went out into the corridor.

That left the two of us in a cell with the door open.

I did not go to him.

"North bedroom," I said. "Two men on the door."

"One of them is that one." He tilted his head at the guard. "He took a long look at your eyes and gave me his keys."

"Lucky."

"Not lucky. You did that."

He stepped inside and closed the distance until I had to look up.

"You haven't said a word to me about the school," he said.

"I've said plenty."

"You've said I watched. You haven't said what came before."

I folded my arms.

"Before, you stood over my bench and told two hundred people we were nothing."

"I came out to ask you to walk with me. Alone, after class. I had it planned." His jaw moved. "Then I saw them on the steps, and I saw Melody's friends with their phones, and I said it."
