Chapter 23: The Hearing
The Gate Watch called it The United States v. One Deputy.
It was heard on Tuesday, January 19, in Courtroom 11-3 of the federal courthouse in downtown Miami.
The real caption was longer.
It asked a magistrate to declare that Lázaro Quesada was exercising the powers of an officer of the United States without an appointment.
The magistrate was a small woman in her sixties with a pencil behind her ear, and she had been warned to expect a circus.
Three hundred people stood against the courtroom walls, and she looked at them like a woman counting exits.
A federal courthouse does not allow firearms.
The marshals had set up a wall of gun lockers on the plaza, with a ticket for each.
I watched four hundred holsters go into them.
It was the bin at the wake again, with serial numbers.
Tía had found my lawyer.
He was the man who had closed her house in 1999.
He was short, he wore a bow tie, and he had never been inside a federal courtroom.
He had read the local rules the night before, all of them, and he told me he enjoyed it.
"Easements are the same everywhere," he said. "A right belongs to someone, or it doesn't."
The government's lawyer wore a navy suit and carried a binder as thick as a phone book.
She argued that authority over firearms inside a federal gate belonged to the United States.
She said that I had been offered a Form G-1 and had turned it down over a clause about signatures.
