Chapter 20: Receipts
"Okay," I said.
Jess plugged in the projector.
The screen came down over the altar with a whine, and the first thing on it was Ainslee's video, paused on the fake text thread.
Frannie, with a green heart.
July fourteenth.
"This is the screenshot that made me a homewrecker," I said. "Look at the clock in the corner."
Jess zoomed in.
1:37.
"Now this is the greenhouse plant sale on October fourth. It was a livestream. Four thousand people watched it."
Jess dragged the livestream to 1:37 p.m. and hit play.
Jess froze it on my dirty hands and Linc's quarters, and a murmur started in the pews.
There was Jess's apron on the tripod, with my phone in the front pocket, lit up and buzzing.
"For that whole minute," I said, "neither of the people in that thread touched a phone. Four thousand people can tell you so."
A murmur went across the pews.
Over Ainslee's head, the words had slowed to a crawl.
[wait the clocks match]
[ok that's weird]
[it's a coincidence, right?]
"Somebody made those texts on the afternoon of October fourth," I said. "While we were selling basil."
