Chapter 15: The Cut

Lucas stood at the top of the stairs with his shoes in his hand.

"Out."

"Out where."

"Out walking."

"At two in the morning."

"I walk at night."

Kevin came down the hall and stopped in front of him.

He smelled like coffee. He'd been up the whole time.

"Give me your shoes."

Lucas handed him his shoes.

Kevin turned them over and looked at the soles and turned them back.

"These are dusty."

"They're shoes."

"These are warehouse dusty."

Lucas didn't say anything.

Kevin put the shoes down on the step and looked at him.

"Where have you been going."

"Out."

"Twice a week. Sometimes three."

"I walk."

"You don't walk. You come back smelling like a set."

Lucas's jaw tightened.

"I've been on sets my whole life. I know what they smell like."

"You've been doing something."

"I've been walking."

Kevin picked up the shoes again and held them.

"Then we'll walk together tomorrow."

"Fine."

"At nine."

"Fine."

Lucas went into the second bedroom and shut the door.

He lay on the bed in the dark with his heart going.

They didn't walk the next night. Kevin had a dinner.

They didn't walk the night after that either.

The following Tuesday Lucas took the bus to Frogtown at eight.
