Chapter 19: The Edge of the Picture

"Louisa?" Leo said. "What is it?"

I didn't answer.

I went to the hall closet and dug through the box of things I'd brought from New York.

The doctor's paperwork was at the bottom, in a folder from the clinic on Fifth Avenue.

The same printed letters ran across the top of every page.

I laid the folder on the counter next to the invitation.

The sliver of letters on the sonogram matched the header on the folder exactly.

"That's my clinic," I said. "That's the clinic where I found out."

Leo leaned over the counter.

I put my finger on the gray curve at the edge of the picture.

"And that's not one baby," I said. "That's the edge of the next one."

He looked for a long time.

Then he looked at me.

"It's yours," he said. "She posted your scan."

"Angela took it out of my suitcase. In February. She said so in the nursery parking lot." My voice was shaking. "She gave it to somebody, and they cut it down to one."

Leo's hands were flat on the counter.

They were very still.

"I'm calling a reporter," he said. "Right now. I'll send them both pictures side by side. It'll be everywhere by tonight."

He already had his phone out.

"Leo."

"She put your picture on the internet and called it her baby. My mother went on television with her. They told the whole country you were a gold digger." He was dialing. "I'm done waiting."
