Chapter 17: Frangipani
The heartbeat came out of the speaker very fast.
Pim lay on the table in the Sukhumvit clinic with her shirt rolled up and gel on her stomach.
The screen above her showed a grey shape the size of a bean.
"Seven weeks and two days," the doctor said. "Strong. See the flicker here? That's your baby's heart."
Nobody spoke.
Phat stood at the head of the table with Pim's hand in his left hand.
In his right, without a word, was the warm hard hand of Chak.
Chak was crying.
He did not make a sound.
Tears just ran down his face and dripped off his jaw, and he stared at the screen.
"It's beating," he said at last, hoarsely.
"Yes, Father," the doctor said, and Chak laughed in a cracked, wet way and wiped his face on his shoulder.
"Don't call me that. Call me Chak."
"It's a first for you," Pim said from the table. "He cries in front of the dog, but never in front of people."
"I'm not crying."
"You're a fountain."
