Chapter 16: The Shot
Niall was already moving when the glass went.
He hit me with his whole body and took me to the floor.
The second shot went through the place where my head had been.
It went through him instead.
I felt it go in.
He grunted, once, low, and his weight came down on me.
"Niall."
"Stay down."
"You're bleeding."
"I know I'm bleeding. Stay down, Kit."
His blood was hot on my neck.
Boots hit the stairs, three at a time.
Kieran came through the door with a gun in his hand and his face gone ash grey.
He looked at Niall and put the gun away without a word.
He ripped off his coat and packed it against the hole under Niall's collarbone, both hands pushing hard.
"Car," he said to me. "Now. You drive."
"You drive."
"Then I'll keep my hands on him."
I drove his car through Dorchester at ninety miles an hour.
Niall lay in the back seat, grey and swearing, with Kieran bent over him.
Kieran whispered the same four words over and over.
