Chapter 21: Shield Wall

Garreth's POV

The first rank of the Host hit our shields, and I heard a sound I had never made myself.

It was the sound two thousand men make when they are forced to run at something they would give anything to stop.

The line bent.

Brigid roared, "Heels in!" and the farmers dug in their heels.

I stood at the center with the Ninth on my left and the baker's boys on my right, my shield locked to a stranger's, and for the first time in eighteen years I fought without that second voice in my head.

I had no idea how to do it.

I knew only what I would not.

I would not kill a bound man if I could stop him.

The wolf in front of me was a boy of eighteen with a Fourth Company badge and red eyes.

He drove his spear into my shield again and again, weeping.

"I can't stop," he gasped. "Sir, I can't stop."

"I know," I said.

"Please."

"Lie down."

I struck him on the temple with my shield rim, hard enough to drop him and not hard enough to kill.
