Damien didn't speak in the elevator.

I took his hand, and he let me.

"She left when I was fifteen," he said. "I haven't heard her voice in twenty-two years."

"You don't have to go in."

"Everything," he said. "I promised."

The boardroom was packed to the walls.

Celia stood at the head of the table in black, her pearls bright under the lights.

At the far end sat a small woman in a gray wool coat.

Silver hair, a narrow face, hands knotted in her lap.

She had Nico's mouth.

Damien stopped in the doorway.

I felt him stop through my whole arm.

"Mr. Kastar," Celia said. "Your mother has asked to be heard."

"I didn't ask," the woman said.

Her voice was thin and clear.

She looked at her son.

He looked at her.

Neither of them moved.

"Mrs. Kastar," the old director said gently. "Please."

She stood.

She held the back of her chair with both hands.

"I was in the house the night Nico died," she said. "My husband came in at midnight. Aldric. He sat at the kitchen table and wept."
