Chapter 17: Barn Door
The barn was dim and warm, and the dogs were not in their runs.
"Hello?" Fionn said.
The collies were shut in the feed room at the back, whining at the door.
That was wrong.
He turned, and the first man hit him in the stomach.
It was one of the night hands, the one with the snicker.
The blow folded Fionn over.
The second man caught him from behind, an arm locked across his chest, and dragged him back into the empty lambing pen.
"Easy," the second man said. "Don't make it loud."
Fionn drove his heel into a shin.
The arm tightened.
He got a mouthful of the man's sleeve and bit, and something struck the side of his head, and the barn lights swung.
