Chapter 13: What Ellen Wrote
Roy took a folded paper out of his wallet.
It was soft at the creases.
"I've carried this since the reading of the will," he said.
"Roy, don't," Darla said.
"Sit there and be quiet, Darla."
She sat there.
He put his reading glasses on and the cord swung against his sweater.
"First I owe you the number," he said to me. "I owe Colt's father eighteen thousand dollars."
"In what?"
"Markers. From his poker nights at the dealership. I signed them over two years."
"Eighteen thousand," I said.
"It was four thousand at the start." His voice cracked. "It grows when you don't pay."
Colt said, "Nobody needs to hear this."
"You do," Roy said, without looking at him. "You were happy to hear it when you wanted the house."
Colt shut his mouth.
