Chapter 6: A Room With a Lock

"You can't stay here," Declan said, when the black cars had gone. "He'll have someone watching the building by noon."

"Then I'll move to June's."

"June lives a dozen blocks from here, and he knows it." He kept his voice reasonable. "I have a house with a guest room. It has a lock on the inside."

"That's a very specific sales pitch."

"I'd rather you hear the lock first."

I packed two bags.

His house was a gray stone building behind a wall, on a street where every car looked expensive and nobody walked.

His Beta drove us there and carried my bags without being asked.

At the top of the stairs Declan stopped at a plain white door.

He took a brass key out of his pocket and set it on my palm.

His fingers closed mine around it and stayed there.

"There's only this one," he said. "I had a locksmith change it this morning. Nobody in the house has another."

"Not even you?"

"Especially not me."

I looked at his hand over mine.

I didn't pull away.

Neither did he, for a long moment.

Then he let go, and my hand felt cold.

The guest room had a big bed and tall windows and a bookshelf, and someone had already put a glass of water on the nightstand.

I locked the door behind me, and sat on the edge of the bed, and listened to him walk away down the hall.

June arrived at noon.

She came up the front steps in her work blazer with a duffel bag, a bag of bagels, and a look I knew well.

"Is it true?" she said, before the door was all the way open. "Is it all true? It's on every pack feed in the city."

"Which part?"

"All of it. Rhett, the stage, the Apex." She dropped the duffel in the hall and looked up at the ceiling. "Is this his actual house? Is the staircase always this big?"

"Hello, June."
