Chapter 17: Posted at the Gap
Every head in the hall turned to the back doors.
Gunnar didn't move.
The twins had stopped cheering. Fern had a hand on each of their shoulders.
"I'm making a charge before the council," Colt said. "Under the Old Law. Death of the Alpha by a kinsman's failure."
The eldest of the council set her gavel down very carefully.
"That charge was never made seven years ago," she said.
"I was twenty-two and burying my father. I'm making it now."
"On what proof?"
"On his own word." Colt pointed. "Ask him. He told the whole pack he was late. Ask him again."
The eldest looked down the hall.
"Gunnar Brennick," she said. "Come forward."
He walked up the middle of the hall, past the tables, the same way I'd walked at the feast.
Wolves leaned back to let him pass.
He stopped at the council table, at the bottom of the stairs, three steps below me.
He didn't look up at me.
"Were you posted at Deer Gap the night the old Alpha died?" the eldest asked.
The hall was so quiet I could hear the fire.
