"Let go of her," Stefano said.

He had not raised his voice.

Eight Ravello men moved at once, and the sound of eight safeties coming off filled the dining room.

Rocco's grip on my wrist did not loosen.

"Cosima. Choose."

Fabiola was making a thin, animal sound in the wheelchair.

The blood had reached the edge of the rug.

"I'll give it," I said.

Rocco's shoulders eased a fraction.

"Here, on this table," I said. "In front of all five families. But first the doctor tells them why."

"Why what?"

"Why I'm the only match. Why he climbed a wall to say my name. Why you kept me for nine years while you gave your love to a girl in a car."

"Doctor," Rocco said.

It was a quiet warning.

The doctor took off his glasses.

His hands were shaking so badly that he dropped them.

"Mr. Lucarelli, I'm sorry."

"Remember your wife."

"My wife is in a Ravello safe house," the doctor said. "Mr. Ravello's men took her from her sister's at dusk."

Rocco turned his head very slowly.

Stefano shrugged.

"I told him I'd keep her safe," he said. "I didn't say from whom."

Ugo drew his gun and pointed it at the doctor's chest.

Every Ravello gun came up to Ugo.

The oldest Don stood up and slapped his hand flat on the table.

"Enough!" he said. "Nobody fires in a Commission trial. Doctor, speak."

I pulled my wrist out of Rocco's hand.
