Chapter 17: Telling Poppy
Eleanor walked out of the dining room with her back very straight.
Nobody spoke until the lobby door shut behind her.
Then the man in the golf shirt started to clap.
He stopped when nobody joined him, and went red, and looked at his eggs.
One of the flower committee women got up from the corner table.
She came over and squeezed my arm.
She didn't say anything.
She'd been at the white church that day, six years ago, in a yellow hat.
I remembered the hat.
Lawrence was standing very still beside me.
His hands were shaking now, after.
"I need to see her," he said.
"She'll be up by now. Hattie's making her pancakes."
"Can I?"
He was asking me.
That was what undid me.
I stood in the middle of that dining room in yesterday's whites, and I cried in front of everybody.
He put his arms around me.
The servers went on pouring coffee around us.
At nine we walked up Front Street together.
Hattie opened the bakery door before we got to it.
She looked at Lawrence's face, then at mine.
