Chapter 31: The Founders' Room
On Monday at ten, the Founders' Room on the thirty-first floor smelled of cedar and old paper.
It smelled of a pipe nobody had lit in eight years.
Someone had left the blinds drawn, and a stripe of December light lay across a desk the size of a rowboat.
Behind the desk stood a leather chair with a cracked arm.
Beside it, set into the paneling at the height of a child's shoulder, was a small iron door.
"He had it built low on purpose," Hester said. "Tobias hated to bend."
Posy stood in front of the little door with the gold key in her fist.
She had worn her good dress for it, the green one, and a coat that was still too big.
"Is this the big one?" she whispered.
"This is the big one."
"Mama said it opens a door."
"I did."
"Can I put it in myself?"
"It's what the key is for," I said. "It's number six on your list."
She looked up, and her gap-toothed grin broke wide.
Then she lifted the chain over her curls and fitted the key to the lock with both hands.
