Chapter 7: Dores
Coll's POV
My father used to say the quiet could charm a wolf to the ground.
He said a Chief who let one try it was no Chief.
He said it over the port at Hogmanay, with the old men nodding.
I was eleven, and I believed every word.
I believed it for twenty-two years.
I believed it on the loch road with Ishbel Gow beside me in the Land Rover and her dead mother's sewing tin in her lap.
I had driven her into Inverness that afternoon for the tin.
Her stepfather had been selling the flat's furniture piece by piece, and she had said she wanted one thing out of it.
She had gone up the stairs alone and come down with the tin and no tears.
I had not known where to put my hands, so I drove, and I looked at the road.
At Dores the light was going over the water.
The loch was black with a strip of red along the far shore.
I pulled into the lay-by without deciding to.
"Is something wrong with the engine?" she asked.
"No."
"Then why have we stopped?"
I could not tell her.
My wolf had been against the front of my ribs for an hour, pacing, as it had paced for twelve days.
