Chapter 21: The Scholarship
The trustees voted right there on the gym floor, with the whole school watching.
The old man went first.
"Keep her," he said, and rapped his cane once on the boards.
The small woman held the leather folder against her chest.
"Keep her," she said. "And strike both demerits. They were never earned."
Rhys's mother looked at me.
"Keep her," she said. "Miss Kincaid, you may stand. You've been sitting there like a girl waiting for a bus."
I stood up.
My knees weren't working properly, and Sean put a hand under my elbow without being asked.
The gym went up.
People stamped on the bleachers, and somebody threw a paper heron into the air, and then a hundred paper herons followed it.
Grayson picked me up off the floor and spun me, and Sean yelled something wordless and happy.
When I came down, Lane was standing a little way off with his phone against his chest.
