Chapter 18: The Recording
Cressida pressed one finger to her phone.
Her father's voice came out of it, small and tinny, and every head at the table turned toward the sound.
"Go to Fall River. Find the mother. Tell her it's all money."
"Dad, I don't want to."
"I want that girl out of her program before the winter dinner. You'll do it, because you do what I tell you."
It was a conversation in an office.
I could hear a door and the ticking of a clock.
Clive, at the head of the table, had gone the color of boiled ham.
"That's an edit," he said.
Cressida pressed the phone again.
The second clip had road noise behind it, and the click of a turn signal.
"My man got the picture through the window," Clive said.
"Post it. I don't care how you word it."
"I want my brother's boy humiliated in front of every person he's ever met."
"And if the trustee sees it?"
