Chapter 20: Clause Nine
The trustee stood up before Clive finished smiling.
"Thank you, Mr. Kell," she said. "I'd like to read the board a paragraph."
She took a folded sheet from her folder, the one with the broken wax seal.
She read one line of it aloud in a dry level voice.
"Judge by what she breaks."
The board sat very still.
Clive's lawyer opened his mouth.
"The will's condition is a partner in fact," the trustee said.
"I have watched Mr. Kell and Miss Pennock through two dinners and a dawn."
"The arrangement between them has just ended by its own terms, in front of eleven witnesses, because he said so."
"A partner in fact is what remains."
"The petition is denied."
Nobody clapped.
But the eleven board members all looked at the man in the pinstriped suit, and then at Clive.
Clive's smile hung on his face.
"This company's money paid for a check in a laboratory," the trustee said to the chairman. "That is a matter for you. I'll send you my file."
