Chapter 9: The Cup
The Moon Rite was held in the open courtyard under a full moon, with every lantern in the keep put out.
It was the only night of the year that the cult stood in the dark.
The elders knelt in a ring of black robes on the white stones.
The Heavenly Demon stood in the center with moonlight on his hair.
Si-hyeon stood one pace behind his left shoulder with a hand on the black sword, being a decorative weapon.
He had been in the cult for eleven days.
He could name every elder by the way they breathed.
The Left Protector carried the rite cup across the stones in both hands.
It was a heavy silver cup, full to the brim with dark wine, and he walked as slowly as a priest.
The rite required the Lord to drink first and the elders to follow.
Si-hyeon had spent ten years in the Azure Cloud Sect tasting his master's tea before his master did.
His master had called it a training exercise.
It had never occurred to Si-hyeon until now that he had been trained to be something his master could use up.
He knew what a cup looked like when somebody had touched it wrong.
The Left Protector was wearing gloves.
Nobody wore gloves at the Moon Rite.
Si-hyeon looked at the wine.
In the moonlight its surface had a faint oily sheen, with a ring of color around the rim.
"Lord," said the Left Protector, bowing deeply, "drink, and be well."
The Demon took the cup.
He lifted it.
Si-hyeon moved before he thought.
