Chapter 23: One Thing
I looked down at her from the top of the church steps.
The reporter was watching us both.
"Not here," I said. "Not on a church step with your audience."
"Where?"
"The clinic in Lakeview. The room where she died. Monday at noon." I came down one step. "Bring a pen. Come alone."
Livia flinched.
Then she nodded.
The Lakeview clinic looked like a nice hotel that had given up on pretending.
Carpet in the halls, a fountain in the lobby, a front desk in pale wood.
The director met me at the door himself.
He was the man who'd had a lawyer in on the Friday after Mama died.
He was sweating in December.
"Ms. Sartori. Of course. Anything you need." He held out an envelope. "And I wanted you to have this in person. The final statement for your mother's account. When the Corsi office stopped paying in October, the last month went to the estate."
I opened it.
Thirty-eight thousand dollars.
"I know," I said. "I've been sending you two hundred a month."
"Yes. Well." He wiped his upper lip. "We're very grateful."
Marisa met me at the elevator in her navy scrubs.
She'd swapped onto day shift for this.
