Chapter 16: Day Forty
On day forty, three men in team windbreakers sat in the front row of the home bleachers with stopwatches and notebooks.
Elliot sat four rows behind them.
Coach Kestner had let him into the stadium for one reason, and he had said it plainly at the gate.
"I want you to watch him fail, Erickson."
Down on the grass, Tanner stood in a gray practice shirt with a football in his right hand.
The team doctor was nowhere in sight, and a man in a golf shirt stood at the sideline with a medical bag.
Shane waited behind Coach with a clipboard, not looking at anyone.
"Ten throws," Coach called, loud enough for the stands to hear. "Short, medium, long. Thurmond, whenever you're ready."
Tanner looked up into the bleachers.
Elliot lifted two fingers off his knee, the sign they had made up in the kitchen.
