Chapter 16: Notice
Magda's POV
Dennis Kruk had called a meeting on the back stairs, so every tenant came and stood on the stairs.
It was Monday, and I work from home on Mondays, so I came down from 3R in my slippers with a cardigan buttoned wrong.
Dolores was already on the first-floor landing, in her house coat, with her cane planted.
The man from 2F stood two steps above her.
The 3F couple held mugs.
The woman from 2R had her arms folded and her cat-ear headband on, and I understood that she had put it on on purpose.
Rafa stood at the bottom with the maintenance notebook in his hand.
He had trimmed his beard, and he had on a clean work shirt, and he looked at me once and then at the wall.
Dennis came in through the back door in his fleece vest, holding a manila envelope.
"Good morning, everyone," he said. "Thank you for coming. I want to be transparent."
"You want to be quick," Dolores said.
"I want to be transparent, Mrs. Hrabak."
He cleared his throat and opened the envelope.
"The company has completed its review of the building's maintenance records."
He lifted the notebook out of Rafa's hands without asking.
