Chapter 15: The Ice
He opened his mouth.
Then the carriage stopped outside the Belmoray house, and he shut his mouth again.
"I will," he said. "When I've got something to put in your hand besides a story."
"That isn't a no."
"It isn't a no," he agreed, and handed her down into the snow, and stood there bareheaded until she had gone in.
The Prince's skating party was the next afternoon, on the frozen lake behind the palace.
There was a bonfire at the far end, where the court stood drinking hot wine.
The Dowager had herself pushed out onto the ice in a chair on runners by the tall footman.
"I'm here to watch my grandson fall over," she announced. "Don't anyone stop him."
The Duke stood at the edge of the ice in borrowed skates, looking at it the way he had looked at the clock in the Belmoray hall.
"I've never done this," he said.
"Ten years in the north, and you've never skated?"
"In the north the ice is for crossing. You walk on it and hope."
Ianthe skated out in front of him, backward, and held out both her hands.
