Chapter 15: Two at Once
I showed them my phone on Thursday night at Julian's house.
We sat in the study, Wade on the leather sofa, Julian at his desk.
I played the video of my mother and Graham Pell in the driveway.
Wade watched it to the end.
He sat with his elbows on his knees and a face like granite.
"She's been with him eight months," he said.
"Yes."
"She was never going to stay."
"No."
His shoulders dropped.
Then, to my astonishment, he laughed.
"I feel like I've been carrying a rock for a year," he said. "And somebody just told me I can put it down."
Julian looked at me over his glasses.
He had put them back on, I noticed, to hide his face.
"You have enough to answer her," he said. "Photographs of the affair, the payments, the originals. Saturday will be a reckoning."
"Saturday is two days away," I said.
I set the phone on the desk.
"Tonight I don't want to talk about her."
They both went quiet.
I stood in the middle of the study with the green lamp throwing light across my legs.
