Chapter 17: The Cap Crew
We drove south through the night with the dry thunder following us down the mountain.
My cousin's phone rang at the Globe turnoff, and he held it out to me without a word.
A woman from the barrio was whispering on the other end.
Headlights were coming down the Salcido road, she said, and a flatbed behind them with a welding rig on the back.
I looked at Ramiro in the passenger seat.
"Colt," he said.
"Lyle does not waste a thunderstorm," I said.
We reached the wells at eleven.
The creosote flats were black under a sky full of stars.
The only light came from three trucks parked in a ring on the gravel pad.
A flatbed stood at the center, with a generator, a welding hood, and two round steel caps the width of a dinner table.
Six men from Payson in hard hats stood beside it, and they did not look happy.
Colt Kimbrough stood in front of them with a clipboard.
He had washed his face since the cookout.
He looked younger without the buckle, and angrier.
