Magnus's POV

I had her page in my coat.

I had carried it there since the church, folded in four against my ribs.

I had read it on the boat by the lamp, and again on the stair, and a dozen times since.

By sale: Enoch Pinkham, mortgage forgiven, Cyrus Hemenway.

It was a bookkeeper's hand, small and square.

She had struck through a line in the town's own book and put the truth in its place, while her father looked at the floor.

I had stood at the back of that hall with my brothers and watched her do it.

Something in my chest that had been shut for eleven years opened like a door.

I did not know what to do with that.

I stood on the dock now with the page against my ribs and watched Cyrus Hemenway's boat come in.

The wind had dropped, and the sea lay flat and gray.

The tower stood over me with its lamp out.

I had told my brothers to stay inside.

Rook had said nothing, which was how I knew he was angry.

"She'll hear him," Ansel had said.

"Let her hear him," I told them.
