Chapter 17: The Cart
The old man did not lie there.
He hooked the canvas strap with two fingers, hauled the bag against his chest and rolled under the Buick's open door.
The engine caught on the second turn.
Another shot starred the rear window, and the car lurched forward with its door swinging.
It took the barrier arm at the gate off at the hinge and went out onto the county road trailing sparks.
Sawyer's shoulders came down as the Buick cleared the gate.
Behind him Lorena said, "Is he driving?"
"He's driving."
Boots hit the corridor outside, many of them.
Boone Hargis came in with two guards, his baton already out.
"Where did it go?" he said.
"Where did what go?" Lorena asked.
"The bag. The Bible. Whatever you gave the priest."
"A medical release for a dead man's family."
She held up the carbon copy between two fingers.
Hargis snatched it and read it twice, his lips moving.
"You think I'm stupid, Doctor?"
"I think you've never read a chart in your life."
His hand went up.
Sawyer was off the cot before the guards had turned.
He did not touch the captain.
He stood close enough that Hargis's raised arm stopped against his chest.
